By  – Senior Reporter, Tampa Bay Business Journal
 Updated

Florida’s two biggest grocers plan to hire thousands of workers throughout Florida and the Southeastern U.S. to meet customer demand during coronavirus outbreak.

Publix Super Markets Inc. and Walmart said they have ramped hiring to meet unprecedented demand. Publix, based in Lakeland, said it will hire “thousands by the end of March” to fill positions in stores and distribution centers. Publix has a seven-state operating area.

Walmart, which made headlines Thursday with plans to hire 150,000 in the U.S. through the end of May. In Florida, the retail giant says it will hire 9,400. Walmart’s key hiring areas in Florida include Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Panama City, Orlando, Destin and Gulf Shores.

“We take pride in serving our communities during times of need, and with the unprecedented demand we are experiencing, we’re in need of more associates to help across our operating area,” Marcy Benton, vice president of human resources, said in a statement. “We’re looking for people who have a desire to serve, are passionate about the food industry, are willing to work hard and ready to build a career at Publix.”

Walmart and Publix are ramping up hiring at a time when thousands find themselves suddenly without a job. Restaurants, retailers, hotels and fitness studios have dramatically cut staff and in some cases completely closed down as public health officials urge public distancing. Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday closed dine-in service at all Florida restaurants, days after shuttering the state’s bars to try to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Amazon looks to hire 100,000 to keep up with surge in orders

Amazon said Monday that it needs to hire 100,000 people across the U.S. to keep up with a crush of orders as the coronavirus spreads and keeps more people at home, shopping online.

The online retailer said it will also temporarily raise pay by $2 an hour through the end of April for hourly employees. That includes workers at its warehouses, delivery centers and Whole Foods grocery stores, all of whom make at least $15 an hour. Employees in the United Kingdom and other European countries will get a similar raise.

“We are seeing a significant increase in demand, which means our labor needs are unprecedented for this time of year,” said Dave Clark, who oversees Amazon’s warehouse and delivery network.

Amazon said this weekend that a surge of orders is putting its operations under pressure. It warned shoppers that it could take longer than the usual two days to get packages. It also said it was sold out of many household cleaning supplies and is working to get more in stock.

The Seattle-based company said the job openings are for a mix of full-time and part-time positions and include delivery drivers and warehouse workers, who pack and ship orders to shoppers.

Amazon is already the second-largest U.S.-based employer behind Walmart, with nearly 800,000 workers worldwide.

Citibank plans to fill 500 high-tech, high-growth jobs in Brandon this year

By
 – Reporter, Tampa Bay Business Journal

Updated

Citibank has plans to hire for 500 high-tech, high-growth jobs by the end of 2020 in the Tampa Bay area.

Citi (NYSE: C) said it recognizes the importance of technology for businesses to succeed.

“If you look at what’s happening, data has become very important over the last few years,” said Mike Healy, Citi’s global head of technology for equities and securities services. “There is a significant importance placed on data scientists who need to collect and analyze quality data, which in turn will create the opportunity for new products, efficiencies and automation of existing processes. Data is paramount; it is critical to every business you have whether it’s banking or beyond.”

The 500 jobs will be roughly two-thirds technology-focused and one-third operational, including data engineers, software engineers and business and data analysts. Citi has two main focuses when it comes to data: preparing data and automating data.

“That’s the challenge we have, is getting data in the right shape,” Healy said. “As more businesses become electronic and digital you have to automate for all that.”

All the jobs will be based at the Brandon campus, joining the more than 7,000 employees currently based there.

“It’s great for the community, great for the environment, great for universities,” Healy said, adding the new positions will help the talent pool created by surrounding universities. “One of the things we’ve been trying a lot to do more of is engage with the universities to provide more jobs for the community and provide graduates with jobs that will keep them challenged and prepare them for advancement, allowing them to stay in the community and contribute back.”

In addition to helping tackle the growing data trend, Healy said the new jobs are also a way to boost the company’s workforce representation, which is used to address pay gap concerns.

TAMPA — Validity Inc., a Boston-based company that specializes in data quality and compliance, opened a new office in Tampa and plans to hire 75 people to fill sales and marketing positions by the end of the year.

The 23,000-square-foot office will be at 4010 Boy Scout Blvd.

According to a press release, Validity, which also has offices in London and Toronto, chose Tampa for expansion because of the city’s commitment to creating a business environment in which tech-based businesses can thrive.

“We are thrilled to join Tampa’s burgeoning tech hub of high-growth companies,” states Don Williams, Validity’s executive vice president of sales and marketing, in the release. “The city has been a great partner to us as we scale and look to attract more talented highly skilled employees.”

The Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corp. connected Validity to resources for workforce training grants, according to the release.

“We welcome Validity to our growing technology ecosystem here in Tampa,” states Alan List, chairman of the Tampa Hillsborough EDC and president and CEO of Moffitt Cancer Center, in the release. “Validity recognizes that Tampa has the highly skilled talent it needs to succeed, and our EDC team is committed to supporting its operations here.”

Article: Fortune 500 company Mosaic to relocate headquarters from Minnesota to Hillsborough County https://careerrebound.org/article-fortune-500-company-mosaic-to-relocate-headquarters-from-minnesota-to-hillsborough-county/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=article-fortune-500-company-mosaic-to-relocate-headquarters-from-minnesota-to-hillsborough-county https://careerrebound.org/article-fortune-500-company-mosaic-to-relocate-headquarters-from-minnesota-to-hillsborough-county/#respond Tue, 15 May 2018 04:00:00 +0000 https://realestatelives.org/article-fortune-500-company-mosaic-to-relocate-headquarters-from-minnesota-to-hillsborough-county/ TAMPA — The Mosaic Company announced plans Monday to move its headquarters from a suburb of Minneapolis to Hillsborough County, making the phosphate mining giant the first Fortune 500 company to decide to relocate here.

Key details — when Mosaic will move and where it will land — are still under consideration.

So is how many employees will be relocated. Mosaic, No. 377 on Fortune 500’s ranking of companies by total revenue, currently has about 150 employees at its corporate office in Plymouth, Minn., company spokesman Benjamin Pratt said in an email.

Mosaic is the world’s largest combined producer of potash and phosphates, two key plant nutrients, and its presence in Florida already is huge, with 3,000 employees, another 3,000 contractors and a Florida payroll of $465 million last year.

The greater Tampa Bay area, of course, has homegrown companies of its own on the Fortune 500, including Publix (No. 85), Tech Data (No. 107), Jabil (No. 152) and Raymond James (No. 469). But persuading an existing corporate heavyweight to pull up stakes and move here is a coup that elated local officials.

“This shows that we’ve arrived,” Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said.

“Fortune 500 company relocations are really rare,” Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corp. president and CEO Craig Richard said. “The fact that they chose Hillsborough County is just another testament to the momentum that the city and the county is experiencing right now.”

Officials hope that landing the first such company will lead to others, just as Bristol-Myers Squibb’s decision to open a major operation in Hillsborough was followed by similar commitments from fellow pharmaceutical companies Johnson & Johnson and Amgen.

Landing a Fortune 500 headquarters has long been a goal of bay area corporate recruiters, a group that in recent years has included Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik, who created a development company called Strategic Property Partners with Cascade Investment, the personal wealth fund of Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates.

In late 2014, Vinik said his company’s No. 1 goal — “our full-court press,” he said — was to get a corporate headquarters for a project that has been since named Water Street Tampa.

Mosaic is not saying where it is likely to land, but it doesn’t sound like Water Street Tampa is off the list.

“We are considering downtown Tampa as well as some other locations,” Pratt said in an email to the Tampa Bay Times. “We haven’t specifically considered Water Street yet.”

Strategic Property Partners did not comment on whether it has had any contact from Mosaic or would pursue the company to join a planned $3 billion project with two new hotels, office buildings, residential towers, a grocery store, dozens of new stores, bars and restaurants and a new building for the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine.

“Water Street Tampa will be a great place to do business for both retailers and for office tenants,” Strategic Property Partners spokeswoman Ali Glisson said in an email. “That having been said, it is our policy not comment on any potential tenant discussion or negotiation.”

Port Tampa Bay president and CEO Paul Anderson said the port would “definitely” talk to Mosaic about the possibility of moving onto port-owned land.

Asked whether Mosaic considered other potential locations, Pratt said, “the choice really came down to Central Florida, or stay where we are.”

Unlike other corporate recruitment efforts, the discussions with Mosaic have not included offers of state and local tax abatements for creating new jobs, Richard said.

“There’s no incentives on the table at this time,” he said, nor was he “aware of any intention to apply for incentives.”

The company does expect several benefits from a move to Hillsborough, including:

• Significant long-term cost savings.

• Opportunities to amplify Mosaic’s presence in Central Florida and engage more closely with communities where they operate.

• Closer proximity and better access to its business operations in South America. In 2014, Mosaic acquired Archer Daniels Midland Company’s fertilizer distribution business in Brazil and Paraguay. Earlier this year, it acquired Vale Fertilizantes in Brazil, doubling the size of its workforce. That, executives say, raised the need to keep its Americas-based business units in close contact with corporate leadership.

“This move will drive improved efficiency and good value,” Mosaic president and CEO Joc O’Rourke said in announcing the relocation.

While Mosaic’s television ads tout its environmental stewardship, its record with state and federal regulators in Florida has been checkered.

In 2013, Mosaic’s Riverview plant was one of two locations in Florida that flunked a new Environmental Protection Agency air pollution standard for sulfur dioxide, a component of smog. Company officials said they were working to bring the plant into compliance with the EPA rules.

In 2015, Mosaic reached two settlements with the EPA to resolve claims about hazardous waste management practices at eight sites in Florida and Louisiana. “The 60 billion pounds of hazardous waste addressed in this case is the largest amount ever covered by a federal or state … settlement,” the EPA said then.

In 2016, a 45-foot-wide sinkhole opened up under the phosphogypsum stack at Mosaic’s Mulberry processing plant, draining the 78-acre pond on top and sending 215 million gallons of contaminated water gurgling into the aquifer. No one contacted the plant’s neighbors because state law didn’t require it. When Gov. Rick Scott found out, he was so outraged he pushed for a change in the state’s pollution notification law.

February 21, 2018

NEW PORT RICHEY — Foodservice equipment manufacturer Welbilt plans to add 110 jobs as part of a three-year capital investment and expansion worth more than $10 million.

New Port Richey-based Welbilt, with $1.45 billion in revenues in 2016, plans to remodel and expand its research and development labs by adding an additional 42,000 square feet of laboratory, test kitchen space and an improved customer experience center, according to a statement. The expansion included assistance from Pasco County and the Pasco Economic Development Council, the release adds.

“Welbilt is pleased to be expanding our presence and extending our long-term commitment to Florida and Pasco County,” President and CEO Hubertus Muehlhaeuser says in a release. “The thriving business climate created by the state and local governments, along with the availability of a highly-educated workforce, excellent universities and great infrastructure, are among the key factors contributing to the success of this area.

Welbilt, which operates in 38 locations in 12 countries and has more than 5,000 employees, hosts more than 2,000 customer visits each year to its Pasco County customer experience center. The firm, according to the statement, is the only commercial foodservice equipment manufacturer that has a full portfolio of hot, cold and beverage equipment and a centralized research and development function.

“This expansion’s economic impact for the county is very significant,” says Pasco EDC President and CEO Bill Cronin in the statement. “We are proud Welbilt put their trust in us to help them expand their operations right here in Pasco.”
