Needed: An Experienced Tax Accountant and Bookkeeper Who Likes to Work

in the Office AND can Interact with Clients!

Yes, we’re searching for the holy grail – an experienced tax accountant who knows Quick Books Online AND is excited to talk to clients.

Like most of us at Opinicus, we like people who’ve worked in hospitality and retail, especially four- and five-star hotels and high-end restaurants. We’ve set a high customer service standard for our clients and would really like to hire an optimist and a problem solver with infectious enthusiasm. We can’t fix sad dogs.

And although critical, fantastic customer service is not enough. We need someone with at least two or three years of tax preparation and bookkeeping experience. Unfortunately, we’re not yet equipped to train recent college graduates or inexperienced new hires.

So, let’s say you have customer service skills and a few years of tax & accounting experience. Then what? At Opinicus, would a tax accountant & bookkeeper be bound to that position forever or would they be able to work on other assignments? Good question.

Since we’re also looking to hire junior and senior financial advisors, if you have an interest in financial planning or investment management you could definitely (preferably!) work on financial planning cases when tax & accounting work is slow. In fact, we would prefer a tax accountant with an interest in finance since these functions are so intertwined at Opinicus.

And if you end up being a better financial planner than accountant, we’d love it! It’s true that we’re looking to hire a tax accountant and we don’t expect that need to go away. But we also don’t want to be so blind to hire for a specific position if we find a terrific person with exceptional skills. We’d rather hire an extraordinary person and work out a role around them.

Okay, that sounds great but why else should you want to work at Opinicus?

Because…

  • We’re entrepreneurs, not stick-in-mud accountants. We value a little unorthodoxy and creativity.
  • We’re family oriented. We know…everyone says that. But we believe that family is more important than money and business “success.” What good is a jet if nobody wants to fly with you?
  • We believe in hard work…and then proper rest. We want happy, fresh, sharp people in the office. Not error prone, burned-out zombies.
  • We don’t “charge time” or set billable hour goals & budgets. This stuff is just busy work and adds needless stress. So, we abolished it.

So, what are the drawbacks to working at Opinicus?

We’re a small business with seven employees. Hopefully we’ll have nine or ten shortly but that doesn’t compare to the huge influx (thousands) of new hires going to large accounting firms, banks, and investment firms.

Although we do have firm outings, dinners, and happy hours with clients, we can’t provide the type of social life you’ll get from working at a huge company. You’ll be able to connect better with us, but if you thrive on office politics, public speaking engagements and so on, you’ll have to find another outlet.

As a small business we don’t have the systems and processes in place that large companies may have. So, if you need a daily to-do list to be productive, you may struggle here. On the other hand, if you excel in an environment without bureaucratic red tape, we’re probably a good fit.

Unfortunately, we can’t offer you the same pay as an investment bank or a soaring tech startup. We can’t offer you stock options. We don’t have any of that ourselves (although we hope to get there one day). But we can offer you enough to be “well off” and, if you’re so motivated, an opportunity to solve the business and financial problems of our clients.

And this type of independent and creative problem solving is overlooked as a source of fulfillment. Earning the deserved trust of clients who come to rely on you is hugely rewarding. Most firms don’t express this in their offers…because they won’t provide the opportunity to get there. You’ll just be a number subject to an internal bureaucracy. But at Opinicus you’ll be in a client facing position with the ability to help entrepreneurs, business owners and high net worth individuals.
