Tax Manager

Our client is seeking an experienced Tax Manager with an understanding of the big picture of small to mid-sized business operations, financial statements, corporate structure, and taxation. Manage and review all annual business, individual, tax-exempt, and estate tax clients, client communications, oversight of staff tax. Must be strong in SALT, state nexus, M1-M3 Tie outs, Basis calculations. Ensure all client tax filing deadlines are met and that tax team understands the SOPs and tax preparation processes to ensure strong work product quality and accuracy. Leadership of tax department to meet company vision and standards along with latitude and creativity to motivate and scale the tax department. Proactive approach to client questions and communications. Foresight to when client intervention by other Management is required. Delegation to Tax and Accounting associates when appropriate.

What your typical workday looks like:

Tax Preparation and Submit for Client Approval and Quality Review (60%)

  • Seamless Tax Season workflow for clients and tax staff
  • Initiate proactive client communications
  • Preparation of complex client tax returns (or train tax staff where necessary to prepare complex returns)
    • Client Business Tax Preparation with Proper workpapers aligned with internal SOPs
    • Client Non-For-Profit Tax Preparation with Proper workpapers aligned with internal SOPs
    • Client Estate/Gift/Trust Tax Preparation with Proper workpapers aligned with internal SOPs
    • Client Personal Tax Preparation with Proper workpapers aligned with internal SOPs
  • Maintain clean, accurate, and thorough work papers, annotations and notes
  • Tie Outs to M1 and M2 schedules. Tie Outs to M3 where applicable
  • Proper Capitalization compliance
  • Proper tax return elections related to specifics of entities as applicable
  • Proper SALT allocations, nexus research and appropriately annotated tie outs
  • Internal and External Basis calculations and tie outs with proper annotations
  • Finalize tax return packages for clients and send over for their review, approval, and signature
  • Make corrections to tax returns based on client feedback where applicable

Staff & Client Supervision (30%)

  • Review personal, business and estate tax returns from Tax Staff and make suggestions for improvements
  • Manage tax client list to ensure compliance deadlines are met and workflow in tax department is consistent
  • Delegate tax preparation duties where necessary to ensure compliance deadlines are met
  • Intervene with tax preparation when needed to assist in preparation, train for proper recording and IRS tax return presentation, and to ensure compliance with tax deadlines
  • Coach staff to deliver superior work product based on internal SOPs
  • Update Tax Preparation and Review SOPs when necessary to deliver superior work product
  • Coach staff to deliver superior client communications when necessary

Tax Research (10%)

  • Tax Update research for Advisory department and new IRS Code updates to be implemented for tax compliance
  • Internal Revenue Code annotation where applicable on client workpapers
  • Tax Hot Topic research where required for tax returns and client documentation
  • Initiate proactive client communications regarding tax topics

What you need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business
  • MBA, Masters of Taxation or Masters of Accounting preferred
  • 5+ years experience in public accounting
  • 10+ years experience in higher level tax functions

Skills Required:

  • Must have strong numerical proficiency
  • Must have strong organizational and task management skills
  • Must have strong UltraTax (Thomson Reuters) QuickBooks and QBO experience
  • Must have strong technology skills to navigate between multiple remote environments
  • Must have strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Must be adaptable to ever-changing technology, Outlook, Zoom, Microsoft Office and other technology platforms
  • Proactive attitude and a go-getter
  • Strives for improvement within this position and will be a motivated self-starter with little supervision
