Accounting Manager Role Summary
Energy Harbor is hiring an Accounting Manager to lead day-to-day accounting operations, own the monthly close, and ensure accurate GAAP-compliant financial reporting. This role will be hands-on in QBO and will manage one direct report, partnering closely with operations and leadership to strengthen controls, improve processes, and support growth.
Key Responsibilities
Monthly Close & Financial Reporting (GAAP)
- Own the monthly close calendar (e.g., 5–10 business day close), ensuring accurate and timely financials.
- Prepare/review journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations (cash, AR, AP, payroll, fixed assets, deferred items).
- Deliver monthly financial reporting packages (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, KPI dashboards) with variance analysis.
- Maintain GAAP-aligned accounting policies, documentation, and close checklists.
Solar-Focused Accounting (Revenue, Job Cost, Margin)
- Oversee revenue and billing workflows (customer invoices, cash application, aging review, reserves).
- Maintain and reconcile job/project cost tracking (labor, materials, subcontractors, change orders) and margin reporting.
- Ensure clean accounting for solar-specific activities (equipment/materials inventory handling as applicable, capitalization vs expense, warranties, O&M/service revenue).
- Partner with operations to improve project setup, cost coding, and field-to-accounting handoffs.
AP/AR Oversight, Cash Controls, and Compliance
- Oversee AP processing and vendor management; review payment runs and enforce approval controls.
- Support AR collections strategy; monitor DSO and identify at-risk receivables.
- Manage recurring compliance activities: sales tax (if applicable), 1099s, basic audit readiness, and documentation support.
- Assist in year-end close and coordinate with external CPA/tax providers.
People Leadership & Process Improvement
- Manage and develop one direct report (e.g., Staff Accountant / AP-AR Specialist): training, delegation, review, feedback.
- Optimize QBO chart of accounts structure, classes/locations (if used), and reporting to improve clarity and scalability.
- Drive continuous improvement: SOPs, automation, and system integrations (e.g., payroll, expense tools, bill pay).
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of monthly close.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial statement preparation.
- Hands-on QuickBooks Online experience (advanced level: close, reporting, troubleshooting).
- Strong Excel/Google Sheets skills; organized, deadline-driven, and detail-oriented.
Preferred
- Solar/renewables experience (residential/commercial solar, EPC/job costing, service/O&M).
- Prior people management experience (even small-team leadership).
- Experience improving accounting processes/controls in a growing business.
- CPA or CPA-eligible (nice to have).
What Success Looks Like (First 90–180 Days)
- Close is predictable, on time, and well-documented with clean reconciliations.
- Improved visibility into project/job margins and cost drivers.
- Tighter AP/AR controls and clearer cash forecasting inputs.
- QBO reporting is standardized, with consistent classifications and fewer manual workarounds.
- Direct report is operating confidently with clear ownership areas.
