The Director of Accounting serves as the senior leader of a boutique, client-focused tax
preparation firm. This individual will oversee all aspects of firm operations, manage a team
of CPAs and staff accountants, and play a central role in the review, quality control, and
signing of tax returns. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced
environment and is equally comfortable reviewing complex returns, meeting with clients,
and managing day-to-day business operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Tax Preparation & Review: Oversee a firm that prepares approximately 600 returns
annually across various filing types, including Forms 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, and 1120-S,
serving clients with diverse and often multi-entity structures. The primary focus of this role
is reviewing returns prepared by staff for accuracy, compliance, and completeness, with
direct preparation limited to select engagements. Serve as an authorized signer alongside
other CPAs on staff. Stay current on federal and state tax law changes and ensure the firm’s
work product reflects current regulations.
Payroll Compliance: Serve as the signer on all quarterly and annual payroll tax filings,
including Forms 941 and 940, for the firm’s payroll clients. Oversee timely and accurate
payroll processing and ensure compliance with federal and state employment tax
requirements.
Client Relations: Meet with existing and prospective clients in person and over the phone
to discuss tax planning, return preparation, and advisory matters. Answer client questions,
provide guidance on tax-related issues, and serve as a trusted advisor. Quote and negotiate
fees for new and returning clients. Maintain strong client relationships and serve as the
primary point of contact for complex or sensitive matters.
Team Management: Directly supervise a team of CPAs and staff-level preparers. Assign
and manage workload distribution, particularly during busy season (January through April)
and extension season (August through October). Conduct performance evaluations, provide
mentorship, and support professional development of team members.
Firm Operations: Manage the day-to-day operations of the firm, including workflow
management, deadline tracking, and quality control processes. Oversee billing, collections,
and client engagement processes. Coordinate with technology vendors and manage the
firm’s tax preparation software and systems. Ensure the firm meets all regulatory, licensing,
and continuing education requirements.
