Company Overview

Sonnenburg Consulting (est. 1999) is a boutique, nationwide financial services firm. We specialize in outsourced accounting, payroll, CFO-level advisory, tax strategy and preparation, and general financial and business consulting, helping small businesses and high-net-worth individuals streamline operations and achieve clarity in their finances. Led by experienced CPAs, we deliver flexible, confidential, and trusted services tailored to each client’s needs.

Overview

Join our dynamic fast-paced team as a Remote Tax Manager (EA or CPA), where you will lead tax planning, compliance, and strategy for business owners and high-net-worth clients. This role offers an exciting opportunity to leverage your extensive tax expertise, including corporate and individual tax law, estate planning, multi-state and regulatory compliance accounting, to support diverse client needs. Bring your technical expertise, strong client communication, and passion for proactive tax strategy to help us deliver exceptional service to our clients.

*This role requires hands-on, high-volume public accounting experience from a small-to-midsize firm. It is NOT a fit for candidates with exclusively in-house corporate tax experience or Big 4 candidates with narrow, single-area corporate specializations.

Responsibilities

  • Review monthly bookkeeping in QuickBooks Online for clients across the firm.
  • Serve as the technical accounting and tax resource for our bookkeeping and staff accountant team, answering their questions on complex transactions, reconciliations, and GAAP treatment.
  • Prepare, sign, and file individual and business tax returns (1040, 1120S, 1065, 1120).
  • Prepare and review trust, estate, and gift returns (1041, 706, 709).
  • Deliver proactive tax planning and tax-savings strategies, including quarterly estimates, entity structure decisions, deduction and credit planning, and multi-year projections.
  • Lead client-facing tax advisory and planning meetings with confidence.
  • Represent clients before the IRS on notices, examinations, and collections.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Communicate clearly with clients on filings, planning opportunities, and open items.
  • Track all client open items and ensure client and statutory deadlines are met.
  • Maintain accurate records in our tax and accounting software.
  • Stay current on tax law updates and technical accounting issues.
  • Research complex tax issues and document conclusions clearly for clients and firm.

  • 7+ years in public accounting fulfilling functions aligned with Senior Tax Manager, Remote Tax Manager, Tax Advisor, Tax Strategist, or Tax Lead roles across multi-client portfolios.
  • Personally prepared and signed a high volume of returns across 1040, 1120S, 1065, and 1120.
  • Proven ability to manage a large client load efficiently, tracking deadlines, open items, and status across dozens of engagements without losing details.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment and moves quickly to resolve issues, respond to clients, and keep work moving forward.
  • Direct experience with trust, estate, and gift returns (1041, 706, 709).
  • Proven tax planning and tax-savings background, with a track record of proactively identifying opportunities to reduce client tax liability beyond compliance work.
  • Experience in QuickBooks Online.
  • Comfortable and confident presenting to clients, including high-net-worth individuals and business owners. You exude confidence in a meeting.
  • IRS representation experience (notices, examinations, collections).
