Accountant I
This is position will perform duties in the Specialty Care Billing Department for the St. Pete Center of the Department of Health. The incumbent will be responsible for verifying eligibility for the County Health Care Plan in the county’s approved database and verifying insurance. Ensuring the appropriate insurance reimbursement codes, procedural codes, fees and services are applied appropriately. This position is being advertised as a pool as may be used to fill multiple positions. The salary for this position $1,040.00 plus a competitive area differential (CAD) of $24.80 bi-weekly.
Your Specific Responsibilities:
- Review client records to determine and translate medical billing and coding procedure using Common Procedure Terminology (CPT) and ICD-10 codes documented by providers.
- Communicates with medical providers to ensure treatment codes are accurately received and applied to the client’s record.
- Communicates with medical providers and program participants to gather and provide accurate billing information.
- Acts as a liaison between the agency and providers to obtain information needed to process claims for reimbursement
- Verify referral information and authorization code as printed on the claim form and is correct according to information entered in Department of Health’s approved database, this includes the number of visits approved, CPT/CDT and ICD-10 codes, and provided services are covered per the County’s guidelines and the provider’s agreement
- Contacts Providers and Clients regarding bills sent by Non-Contracted providers to clients explaining the policy of the County Health Program
- Use multiple computer applications, CPT/CDT, ICD10 manuals/software programs, and other technical resources and keeps technical skills current which includes HMS, Change Health Care, fee schedules and CHEDAS to ensure duties are performed accurately
- Additional Duties includes: Enters services in HMS, generates authorizations for post-authorized claims and other data entry in HMS to allow Services to be billed and invoiced in a timely manner to meet agency guidelines and requirements
- Enter/bill services, creating provider’s invoices/statements and post payments against SC invoices.
- Mail distribution when needed.
Other duties and responsibilities of this position includes, but are not limited to the following:
- Verifying client insurance eligibility status
- Posting Payments
- Reconciliation of daily posting
- Typing/Data Entry
- Maintaining and retrieving data received by using the approved Department of Health computer systems/databases.
- Entering services form 1500 claim forms into HMS System.
- Downloading and sorting data from daily reports into Excel spreadsheets to use in the completion of daily assignment(s).

- Knowledge of various computerized medical systems and resources to complete assignments.
- Detailed oriented and possess excellent organization and customer service skills.
- Able to work within strict deadlines.
- Displays excellent interpersonal skills, maintains effective working relationships with others to accomplish department goals.

Preferred –
- Knowledge and understanding of Privacy and Security Laws and HIPAA guidelines
- Knowledge of and/or experience working in the Department of Health Billing Portal
- Knowledge of verifying client insurance in the Florida Medicaid System or use of other insurance verification/eligibility web portals.
