GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
To support the Territory Manager’s efforts to maximize single copy circulation sales and distribution operational goals.  To assist and implement directives of the Territory Manager. To participate in the development and implementation of single copy operations, sales plans, and budgets. To communicate with independent contractors and negotiate contract proposals.

External – Interact in a positive, enthusiastic, and professional manner with readers, potential readers, independent contractors, retail accounts, the general public, vendors, and other necessary business contacts including other newspapers and related industries.

Internal – Interact in a positive, enthusiastic, and professional manner with circulation administration, customer service, systems, rack maintenance, production, packaging, transportation, distribution staffers, marketing, news, advertising and other departments as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Actively models and reinforces the Company’s vision, mission, and core values with all company employees.
  • Maintain sales goals through store visits to include merchandising, placement, and communication with store staff.  Communicate observations to contractors, work with them to increase sales opportunities.
  • Manage single copy contracts, contract negotiations, monitor draw and return data, shrink data, and communicate appropriate information to contractors, and perform necessary field adjustment entries to pay contractors agreed upon fees and charges.
  • Manage items that affect the Revenue and Expense due to negotiated rates, keep within budget.
  • Understand and communicate departmental and company policies.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of the Tampa Bay Times, its systems, products, and services.
  • Assist Territory Manager in establishing weekly, monthly, and yearly marketing plans and reports to maximize sales for circulation growth in the region.  These plans are to include market assessments and proposals for future delivery expansion (in areas as assigned) along with implementation and measurement methods.

 

  • Gain a thorough understanding of all newsrack and property ordinances and business licenses within assigned area by coordinating efforts with the Facility Department.
  • Be knowledgeable about the various types of newsracks available for lease and in-store displays for use by contractors.  Learn how to trouble shoot and perform minor repairs to news racks.
  • Oversee night operations as necessary.
  • Provide vacation coverage for Territory Manager.
  • Deliver open distribution areas as necessary.
  • Prospect for independent contractors.
  • Create positive relationships and increased sales opportunities with retail accounts through frequent visits and communication.
  • Work closely with Regional Distribution Manager and Territory Manager to implement promotional programs.
  • Perform related duties as assigned or required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Assists with supervising up to 10 support team members to include: Distribution Coordinators, Distribution Merchandisers and Distribution Field Assistants.

  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with staffers, independent contractors and customers.
  • The ability to lead by example.
  • Candidate needs to possess the following: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, planning and organizational skills, interpersonal skills, coaching, leadership, public and employee relation skills, computer skills – knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access plus Lotus Notes, basic math skills, mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to analyze sales data, determine trends, and forecast sales volumes.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and make sound decisions under the pressure of meeting deadlines.
  • Must possess complete understanding of performance management evaluation process and have the ability to actively apply that knowledge.
  • Possess the ability to act decisively in difficult circumstances.

WORKING CONDITIONS;

  • Works irregular hours or hours outside of normal office hours.
  • Plant, or Delivery Center, exposed to noise, dirt and/or heavy machinery.
  • Requires travel as regular part of job.
  • Frequently outdoors, exposed to heat, cold, rain and wind.

Must be able to lift 35 pounds.
