The word is out – Pinellas is on Track for a Bright Economic Future and our Economic Development team is seeking a Business Assistant Specialist to help us chart the course.  This is responsible analytical and administrative financial and research work promoting and coordinating economic development and assisting small businesses to locate and expand within Pinellas County.

Depending on area of assignment, an employee in this class provides assistance to managers in performing research projects, SBE Programs, marketing, sales and trade shows.  This individual also provides assistance to the development of small businesses, small business redevelopment or the expansion of existing small business. An employee in this class can provide significant input in the developing, monitoring and evaluating multiple budgets relating to the distribution of federal and county grant funds. An employee in this class serves as a resource for economic development to assist in the implementation and the coordination of short and long term strategies to meet the objectives of the Florida Small Business Development Center (FSBDC) and Small Business Enterprise Program (SBE). Incumbent performs with independent judgment and initiative under the general supervision of a Senior Economic Development Manager.  Strong interpersonal skills are a requirement. Considerable independence of both judgment and actions are inherent and authority is delegated commensurate with this degree of responsibility.

What Would You Do?

  • Efficiently manage and prioritize tasks from multiple stakeholders in a quick-moving production environment.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and deadlines, ensuring all tasks are completed accurately and on time.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to clarify requirements, provide updates, and address any issues that arise.
  • Maintain a high level of organization and attention to detail to manage concurrent projects and responsibilities.
  • Utilize project management tools and techniques to track progress, allocate resources, and ensure successful task completion.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and problem-solving skills to navigate the demands of a fast-paced work setting.
  • To have detailed knowledge necessary to assess client needs and cross promote program services resulting in accurate referrals to SBE Program, PCED, SBDC and other partners. Responding to various inquires i.e. telephone, walk-ins, businesshelp.org, and electronic client requests for service (ERCs). 
  • Assist Center Director with program documentation for the Small Business Enterprise Program. This assistance helps the Director with administrative responsibilities for the Center’s County, contractual and stakeholder obligations.
  • Ensure all public-facing materials are current, accurate, and aligned with the division’s branding guidelines. Maintain and update the division’s website, Salesforce, and Blackthorn platforms.
  • Coordinating class registrations for SBE Program and SBDC
  • Answering business assistance technical assistance calls, SBE inquires, and business help emails.
  • Partnership interactions (Chambers, USF, SBDC, SPARK, TBBIC, etc.)
  • Aggregating SBDC and SBE Program deliverables
  • Maintains a small business resource library of contemporary reference and statistical resources; produces customized reports and data summaries for use with existing business, prospective business, redevelopment, and grant applications.
  • Develops and maintains contacts and close working relationships with economic development organizations, local governments, chambers of commerce, existing business and industry.
  • Assisting walk-in traffic in the reception area when the front desk receptionist is out of the office.
  • Prepares monthly mileage reports for division staff.
  • Coordinates and reconciles all travel arrangements (registrations, flights, and hotel) for division staff.

What Do You Need To Have?

  • 4 years of highly responsible experience in public or business administration that includes marketing, economics, finance, or major public or business planning functions; or
  • Associate’s Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Marketing, Planning, or related field plus 2 years’ experience in public or business administration that includes marketing, economics, finance, or major public or business planning functions; or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Marketing, Planning; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Florida Driver’s License. 
  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
