CONTROLLER JOB DESCRIPTION
Reports to: CFO ½ FLSA Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
The Mahaffey Apartment Company is Owner and Manager of over 8,500 apartment units in Florida. This job description is for Controller in the corporate office located in St. Petersburg, FL.
THE POSITION
The Controller is expected to lead the execution of effective accounting protocols and controls to support strong financial performance and compliance. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role is considered a senior management support role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including working with the CFO to ensure the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives.
- Develop and manage appropriate processes and controls, including ensuring adherence to all internal policies and procedures and all external compliance requirements (GAAP, etc.).
- Process payroll in a timely manner and ensure quarterly payroll tax forms are filed and appropriate payments made.
- Oversee AP & AR functions including workflow and department associates.
- Ensure the timely and accurate preparation, delivery and analysis of all financial statements, as well as periodic budgets and forecasts.
- Manage the audit and tax preparation process; work closely with third party auditors and advisors to ensure timely and accurate completion of audits and tax returns and resolution of complex issues.
- Provide insights and analysis to CFO regarding past results and future forecasts.
- Serve as a liaison to external auditors.
- Manage parent company (MAC) AP/AR and financial statement preparation.
- Lead, manage, and continuously improve team of direct reports overseeing accounting functions across the portfolio – both local and onsite at property locations.
- Facilitate annual workers’ compensation insurance audit.
SPECIAL PROJECTS:
- Works to build out internal processes for interaction with the management and accounting software to fully utilize and realize all operational efficiencies.
- Assists CFO in analyzing potential 401k plan creation.
- Manage an RFP process to select and implement a third-party payroll software platform across the organization, including working with members of the senior management team to develop standardized payroll policies and procedures.
- Assists with annual budgeting preparation by establishing a uniform format and providing guidance on company-wide expenses and assumptions.
- Completes other special projects on an as-needed basis to support effective operations and responsible growth.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES
· Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
· 10+ years’ experience in progressively responsible financial/accounting roles.
· Public accounting experience preferred.
· Experience with a privately held, and/or family-owned business.
· Proficient in RealPage, Yardi, MRI, or similar accounting software.
· Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize workload in order to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate and collaborate with other members in the company.
· Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
· High level of interpersonal skills with demonstrated poise, tact and diplomacy.

POSITION SPECIFICS & BENEFITS
- Full-time position; Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm
· 1 week vacation after one year
· 2 weeks’ vacation after two years and above
· Discretionary days on an escalating basis, up to 7 per year
· Health/Dental/Vision/Life Insurance available after 75-day waiting period
· Good background required
· 90-day probationary period
