Deputy General Counsel – Progressive Home (St. Petersburg, FL Area)

Progressive Home/American Strategic Insurance (ASI) has an exciting senior leadership opportunity for a Deputy General Counsel – Property (DGC), reporting to Progressive’s Chief Legal Officer. As the DGC you’ll be a generalist with (i) a focus on homeowners’ insurance; (ii) expertise in regulatory and compliance issues; and (iii) the legal aspects of insurance claims handling.

You will provide legal advice in the areas of insurance product design, regulatory compliance, governmental affairs, risk management, litigation management, claims management, general corporate governance and general business law matters.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Own and lead the legal function for a homeowner’s insurer, with a specific focus on product development and integrity, risk management, regulatory reporting, and interaction with associated departments of insurance and other regulators
  • Provide advice and guidance on the resolution of policy contract issues, regulatory investigations, complaints and other adversarial matters
  • Draft, review and support the negotiation of commercial agreements, including the service providers, employment and severance agreements
  • Manage insurance programs and associated claims
  • Develop corporate policies to ensure compliance with federal, state and local government regulations; respond to government inquiries regarding same
  • Coordinate negotiation and administration of real estate leases and renewals
  • Develop and implement processes and procedures to ensure efficient and consistent conduct of company business
  • Maintain corporate books and records for company and its affiliated legal entities
  • Work with outside counsel to develop project scope and fee estimates; review work product and invoices for accuracy
  • Manage organization of lawyers and staff
  • Provide training to company and its affiliated legal entities on substantive legal topics
Must have qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited law school
  • Member in good standing to the bar of at least one state
  • 12 years of legal experience with applicable subject matter expertise

  • Multi-jurisdiction experience working across jurisdictions on insurance, compliance, and risk
  • Commercial negotiation experience in areas including complex insurance/reinsurance agreements, contracts and license
  • Superior people leadership and management experience
  • Ability to conduct legal research, analyze information and solve problems. You must be able to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professional demeanor, work well under pressure, and have a strong work ethic and an appropriate sense of urgency
  • Ability to function with a high degree of efficiency and independence
  • Ability to execute and excel in a high-paced organization
  • Experience in building relationships and a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to deal with changing environments, tight timelines and multiple priorities
  • Outstanding oral, written and presentation-based communication skills
