JOB DESCRIPTION
As a non-profit (501-C-3) corporation, the is dedicated to supporting and enhancing the economic development downtown while protecting and promoting DeLand’s historic heritage.
The Executive Director will coordinate, facilitate, promote and advance the MainStreet program. The Executive Director will serve as a visionary, listener, and collaborator with various civic and professional constituents in the community, particularly downtown business owners. The Executive Director will encourage awareness of the MainStreet program and act as a liaison to other communities in Volusia County and around the state that could benefit from the offerings of the MainStreet Program.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manages all administrative aspects, including developing and maintaining an appropriate data system for record keeping; developing and monitoring budgets, accounting, purchasing; preparing reports; documenting all physical changes to downtown; retaining information on job creation and business retention.
- Coordinates the activities of the MainStreet Program Committees and plans a number of special events throughout the year.
- Supervises support staff.
- Develops strategies for downtown economic development and historic preservation.
- With the committees and Board of Directors, creates an annual action plan focused on these four areas: design, promotion, organization, and economic restructuring.
- Develops and conducts public awareness and education programs to keep the program highly visible.
- Provides guidance to individual tenants or property owners regarding physical improvements.
- Provides advice and information, assesses and encourages joint involvement in the downtown community’s promotional events – advertising, uniform store hours, special events, business recruitment, parking management, etc.
- Advises and assists in efforts to attract people to downtown.
- Helps build strong, productive working relationships with appropriate public agencies at the local and state levels.
- Coordinates and recruits an active volunteer force.
- Participates in appropriate community organizations including Discover DeLand, MAC DeLand, MainStreet Florida, CRA, EDC, City Commission, and River of Lakes.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Dynamic self-starter.
- Special event planning experience.
- Marketing or advertising skills desired.
- Knowledge of downtown public and private issues desired.
- Good organizational skills.
- Professional and/or academic economic development experience strongly desired.
- Historic preservation skills desired.
- Experience in administrative management.
- Strong computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Must be able to work weekends/evenings for special events.

Work is performed half of the time in the office and half of the time out in the community attending meetings and coordinating events. Some outdoor work is required. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is often required to stand or walk.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Tools & Equipment Used: Personal computer, including word processing software, database systems, and graphic programs. Vehicle, calculator, phones, copy and fax machine.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a BS or BA degree required. Five years of experience in community development, business economics, or downtown development, and/or marketing and promotion. Any equivalent combination of education and experience, with additional education substituting on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The Executive Director should have education and/or experience in one of more of the following areas: architecture, historic preservation, economics, finance, public relations, design, journalism, planning, business administration, public administration, retailing, volunteer or nonprofit administration and/or small business development. The Executive Director must be sensitive to design and preservation issues. The Executive Director must be entrepreneurial, energetic, imaginative, well organized, and capable of functioning effectively in an independent situation. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. Supervisory skills are desirable.
