The Tampa Bay Rays are recruiting for experienced Analysts to join our Baseball Research and Development department. Our R&D group helps shape our Baseball Operations decision-making processes through the analysis and interpretation of data. We are seeking those with a passion for baseball and a desire to contribute through mathematics, high level data analysis, and computation. The next member of our R&D team will solve hard problems that demand creative, mathematically sophisticated modeling approaches, develop and answer interesting questions through the available data, develop, test and validate quantitative tools, communicate the results of their research, and work to apply their research outcomes to improve how our organization operates. Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop a number of customized, sophisticated models to answer various questions and solve problems
  • Generate internal quantitative tools for use by other members of the department
  • Administer the processing of quality data from various sources
  • Examine the relationship between the data from various sources and player performance
  • Create reports at the request of various stakeholders and decision makers
  • Investigate ways to improve current tools
Education, Skills and Requirements:
  • Experience with Bayesian modeling and building models in the Stan programming language preferred
  • Demonstrated experience building hierarchical/multilevel models preferred
  • Experience building models that require more than standard use of R/Python packages is a plus
  • Advanced degree in stats/math/related field OR 2+ years work experience in building forecasting models
  • Candidates with non-traditional schooling backgrounds and 2+ years of modeling in a professional environment will be considered
