Our Organization and Mission:The Office represents the State of Florida in state and federal civil and criminal courts, from trial courts to the Supreme Court of the United States. 

Pay: $30,000 – $32,000 Annually 

Position Summary: This position is in the Medicaid Fraud Unit.

Qualifications: Completion of a training program to become a Legal Assistant, a Paralegal, a Legal Paraprofessional or a Lawyer’s or Attorney’s Assistant; or a degree or certificate in legal technology, legal administration, legal studies or allied legal services; or graduation from a school of law; or a bachelor’s degree with a major in allied legal services; or four years of experience involving paralegal work; or four years of experience in legal secretarial work.

The Work You Will Do: This position is responsible for a variety of paralegal functions as legal assistant to the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit or the Complex Civil Enforcement Unit within the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.  This position requires a thorough knowledge of the structure and legal activities related to the investigation and prosecution of criminal and civil cases by the MFCU, and civil and qui tam cases, including multi-state and federal combined cases, investigated, and prosecuted by the CEB.Duties include functions that are complex in nature and performed under minimum supervision. Depending on whether the individual is assigned solely to the MFCU or the CEB within the MFCU duties include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare a variety of legal documents for the attorneys such as discovery pleadings and notices of deposition, motions, orders, plea agreements, and memorandum to be filed in court in connection with criminal or civil prosecutions. Draft general correspondence, including investigative subpoenas as instructed for attorneys’ review and signature.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of case management documents, such as spreadsheets, electronic paralegal notes, indexes, logs, summaries, or compilations of information for investigations, litigation, NAMFCU activities and periodic reports required in accordance with agency practice.
  • Receive calls from witnesses and law enforcement personnel, provide information on the status of the case, and answer questions concerning the legal process.
  • Maintain case files, both electronically and hard copy documents, court calendars, and litigation timetables for the attorneys. Work closely with clerks of court, judicial assistants, NAMFCU representatives, other State Attorneys General’s office staff, law enforcement officers, private attorneys, and public defenders. Maintains library resources log.
  • Analyzes, reviews and drafts case management documents such as complaint intakes, closing reports, qui tam, and multistate spreadsheets
  • Assist attorneys in interviewing witnesses in preparation for depositions and court hearings. 
  • Perform legal research, gather information, and conduct interviews regarding criminal prosecutions. 
  • Attend internal and external qui tam meetings and create minutes of the meetings.
  • Monitor seal dates and prepare motions and orders for extensions of seal in appropriate cases.
  • Work collaboratively with other administrative staff and perform cross trained functions of other administrative employees to enhance effectiveness of unit administrative activities.
  • Perform projects and assignments for attorneys, as assigned.
  • Purchases office supplies and maintains appropriate quantity of necessary office supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
