JOB DESCRIPTION:

Performs grounds maintenance work on City parks, rights-of-way, and other City owned properties to provide a safe and aesthetically pleasing recreational environment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Working in adverse conditions, mows and edges lawns; trims shrubs, installs sod, and sprays chemical in City owned parks, properties, recreation fields, and rights-of-way; works clay into ball fields.
  • Transports heavy equipment and lawn equipment to assigned work areas; transports and arranges picnic tables and other supplies to City lots for special functions; inspects and maintains City equipment and Parks maintained property for safety hazards.
  • Picks up and disposes of trash, maintains park appearance, disposes of clippings and removes animal waste and dead animals; repairs fences; patches concrete; replaces and maintains basketball nets, tennis court nets, and barbecue grills; inspects and replaces worn or damaged playground equipment.
  • Conducts irrigation inspections, installations, adjustments, and repairs; applies chemical, insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
  • Must have ability to work overtime and callout as directed, which requires a method of contact during off duty hours.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of parks maintenance, concepts, and tenets.
  • Knowledge of the City’s policies regarding park maintenance, management, and use.
  • Knowledge of the proper methods of disposing of trash, trimmings, and other refuse.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in operating landscaping equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work involves moderate physical effort in the outdoors and requires standing, walking, or getting in difficult positions. May be required to move objects weighing up to 60 pounds on occasion.
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent in education and the equivalent of one (1) years’ experience performing general building, facility, or structural maintenance in adverse conditions.
  • Must have the ability to possess and maintain within the first six months of employment a Florida DOT approved intermediate level traffic control qualification, Limited Certification for Urban Landscape Commercial Fertilizer, and Limited Lawn and Ornamental License for pesticide applicators.
  • Requires a valid Florida CDL Class B license with air brake and tanker endorsement. May have a temporary permit and obtain required CDL license within ninety (90) days of date of hire.
