Science and Conservation Staff Biologist Job Description

The job of the staff biologist covers multiple aspects. One of the main tasks is to review state and federal permit applications for projects that may affect manatees or their habitat. If necessary, the staff biologist will coordinate with the reviewer and write comment letters on behalf of SMC. As the staff biologist will be the primary point of contact in the office regarding manatee inquires, part of the job includes interacting with citizens who contact SMC with questions on manatee biology, conservation efforts, or current projects. Additionally, this job entails providing assistance to the Director of Science and Conservation on a variety of projects. Such projects include reviewing and summarizing scientific reports, performing background research on issues relating to manatees and their habitats, and gathering and organizing scientific data. In coordination with the Conservation Department, the staff biologist will also work with the Education Department on multiple projects. These include developing and delivering educational presentations, maintaining and updating certain educational materials as needed, and shipping educational supplies to other organizations. The staff biologist may be called upon to prepare comments and speak at public hearings.  Lastly, the staff biologist is responsible for writing articles for various SMC publications.

 

Abilities:

 

The staff biologist should have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in marine science or a related environmental field. The applicant must be able to work independently and without direct supervision. Having good writing, research, oral communication, and organizational skills is essential and the applicant must be willing to travel on occasion to meetings and events in Florida. Experience or familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a plus.
